Eighteen people have been arrested in an operation to force DRUGS OUT OF HATFIELD

 

UPDATE 19 Oct 2017 : Police in Welwyn Hatfield have made four further arrests as part of Operation Vinic.

 

  • On October 17, whilst on patrol in the Lemsford Road area of Hatfield, officers from Operation Scorpion spotted two men who appeared to be acting suspiciously outside Clayton House. As they approached the men, officers believed they saw them discard something they were holding.  On further investigation officers found the discarded items to be two wraps of Class A drugs.

The two men, a 29-year-old man and a 35-year-old - both from Hatfield - were arrested on suspicion of Possession of a Class A drug. They have been released pending further investigations.

 

  • Shortly after officers stopped a man who approached the entrance to Clayton House. After searching him and his car, he was found to have Class B drugs in the vehicle and just over £4000 in cash. He was arrested on suspicion of Possession of a Class B Drug with Intent to Supply and remains under investigation for this offence.
  • The man was also arrested in connection with a robbery he was wanted for which is alleged to have happened in Hatfield in September and non-payment of fines.

 

Daryl Jervier, from Stantonbury Milton Keynes - was charged with robbery and appeared at Hatfield Remand Court where he was sentenced to 39 days in prison for the non-payment of fines.  He is next due to appear at St Albans Crown Court on November 17 in relation to the robbery.

To drive out Class A and Class B drug related crime in Hatfield, police carried out a week of action (Tuesday, September 19 to Wednesday, September 27) which resulted in the execution of several warrants at addresses and targeted patrols in the town.  As part of the operation, officers are also appealing for the public’s help with any information they might have about suspected drugs use and anti-social behaviour (ASB).

 

Eighteen arrested as part of operation to force drugs out of HatfieldThe week of action was rolled out as part of Operation Vinic - an on-going drive aiming to tackle Class A and Class B drugs offences in Hatfield and associated ASB, some of which is believed to be fuelled by offenders crossing over Hertfordshire’s borders from London.

 

Operation Vinic has seen officers from Welwyn Hatfield’s Operation Scorpion Team, Welwyn Hatfield Safer Neighbourhood Team, the Local Crime Unit and the Intervention Team involved in the drive. Eighteen people were arrested as a result of this work. Eight of these were released with no further action to be taken against them and ten are facing further police investigations and conviction.

 

 

Eighteen arrested as part of operation to force drugs out of HatfieldAs part of the operation, police are working closely with Welwyn Hatfield Council and local housing associations to tackle ASB which has been reported by the public and is believed to be associated with the drugs offences.

 

The week of action saw officers execute drugs warrants at four addresses and targeted patrols (already said this above). The results of these activities are as follows:

 

  • On Tuesday, September 19 police executed a warrant at St Michael’s View in Hatfield. Whilst in the property officers seized two wraps of Class A drugs, a quantity of cash and drugs paraphernalia.

 

- A 42-year-old man from Hatfield was arrested at the address on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of a Class A drugs. He was released pending further police investigations.

- Forty-eight-year old Alison James from St Michael’s View was also arrested at the address. She was charged with possession of a Class A drugs and bailed and is due to return to Hatfield Remand Court on October 10.

 

 - On Wednesday, September 20 police executed a warrant at Jubilee Court in       Hatfield. No one was present at the address at the time; however drugs paraphernalia was found in the property.

 

 

Eighteen arrested as part of operation to force drugs out of HatfieldWhile police were searching the address a man arrived in a car and appeared to be behaving suspiciously. Officers searched the man and his car and found five bags of a Class B drug which they seized.

 

 - As a result, a 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a Class B drug with intent to supply. He was released pending further investigations.


  • Whilst on Operation Vinic patrols in the Birchwood area of Hatfield on Friday, September 22, officers saw a vehicle containing a driver and passenger who appeared to be acting suspiciously in Great Heath.  After the driver visited an address on the street, officers investigated further and found he was in possession of Class B drugs. He also failed a roadside drug drive test and was arrested.

 

As a result a 21-year-old man from Hatfield was arrested on suspicion of Possession of a Class B Drug and Driving under the Influence of Drugs. He was given a caution for possession of cannabis and released pending further investigations for drug driving.

 

Eighteen arrested as part of operation to force drugs out of HatfieldOfficers then conducted a search at the address the arrested man had just left. The address in Great Heath was searched and 45 deal bags containing Class B drugs worth around £450, a quantity of cash and drugs paraphernalia were seized.

 

- The occupants of the address, a 21-year-old man from Hatfield and an 18-year-old woman from St Albans were arrested on suspicion of Possession of a Class B Drug with Intent to Supply. They were both released pending further police investigations.

 

  • On Monday, September 25, whilst on Operation Vinic patrols, officers returned to the Birchwood area of Hatfield and searched three people who appeared to be behaving suspiciously.

- One of the men, 29-year-old Leslie Ruddick from Goldings House, Hatfield was arrested and charged with possession of a Class A drug. He was bailed to appear at Hatfield Remand Court on October 13.

 

Eighteen arrested as part of operation to force drugs out of HatfieldOfficers then executed another warrant at an address in St Michael’s View and seized a large quantity of Class A drugs.

 

- As a result 42-year-old Damien Martin, from St Michael’s View, Hatfield, was arrested and charged on suspicion of Possession of a Class A Drug with Intent to Supply. He was remanded at court and is next due to appear on October 27.

 

  • On Tuesday, September 26, officers continued Operation Vinic patrols. Whilst in Link Drive in Hatfield they spotted a vehicle where the driver and his two passengers appeared to be acting suspiciously. After further investigations the following arrests were made:

- 26-year-old Maxwell Silwando from Lydford Road, Hackney was charged with Possession of Class B Drugs and Possession of an Offensive Weapon. He is due to appear at Hatfield Remand Court on October 17.

- 18-year-old Sadaq Omar from Silverdale Road, Hayes was also arrested in connection with breaching former court orders and two counts of failing to appear court. He currently remains in police custody.

 

  • On Wednesday, September 27 officers executed a search warrant at Wood Common. No one was in the property at the time and no items were seized.

 

Detective Inspector John Hazeldine, who leads Welwyn Hatfield’s Local Crime Unit, said: “As with every area in the country, Class A and Class B drugs sadly do exist in Hatfield.  We have been monitoring drugs offences and associated criminality in Hatfield, and after reports from the public, proactive investigations and intelligence gathering, we launched Operation Vinic to tackle the issues.

 

“Our intelligence led investigations have revealed that some of these offences can be attributed to criminals from London crossing into Hertfordshire’s borders to contribute to more local drug related crime.  As drugs can genuinely blight local communities, we are determined to do everything to put a stop to such offences and drive these criminals out of Hatfield.

“We are working proactively to gain intelligence on drugs offences in the area and as part of this, the public has been fantastic in reporting anything suspicious to us.

 

“Reports from members of the public make a real difference to our investigations and I would urge anyone who suspects drugs activity in their local area or in pubs and clubs to please continue to report it to us. Any information you provide could be the missing jigsaw piece which will lead us to catching an offender.”

Welwyn Hatfield’s Chief Inspector Ruth Dosworth said: “I am delighted with the results my officers have achieved as part of Operation Vinic so far, and we will not relent in these efforts.

 

“Police in Welwyn Hatfield are very much on top of drugs offences in the area and this is reflected through the arrests which have been made recently.  We are achieving good results and I would like to make those involved in drugs offences aware that we will catch you, and you will face conviction.”

 

Residential Closure Orders in Hatfield

 

To tackle ASB which has been reported to police in recent months, and is believed to be connected with the suspected drugs offences which Operation Vinic is targeting, Welwyn Hatfield Safer Neighbourhood Team is working with Welwyn Hatfield Council and local housing associations to put Closure Orders in place on some of the properties which have had warrants executed at them as part of this investigation. If successful, further details about these Closure Orders will follow.

 

Welwyn Hatfield’s Safer Neighbourhood Team Inspector Sophia Adams, said: “To help us in the fight against drugs offences in Hatfield and associated ASB we are working closely with partner agencies to put long term measures in place to put a permanent stop to these crimes. To help us to achieve this we rely on reports of ASB and anything suspicious from members of the public. So please do report anything of concern to us via the non-emergency number 101 and if you witness a crime or ASB in progress dial 999.”
